Tips for Avoiding the Flu
• Get vaccinated – Twice. This is one of the best ways to avoid the flu. This year, you’ll need to be vaccinated twice – once for the seasonal flu, and once for the H1N1 (swine) flu. The H1N1 vaccine is expected to be available mid- to late-October. Check with your doctor to see if your children will need one or two doses of each vaccine. Also check to see if you as a parent qualify for the H1N1 vaccine.
• Cover your mouth and nose when you cough or sneeze.
• Clean up. Wash your hands often, with soap and water. Use an antibacterial cleanser when you’re on-the-go. Spend about 10-15 seconds washing, about as long as it takes to sing “Happy Birthday” or your “ABCs”.
• Hands to yourself. Try to avoid touching your nose, mouth or eyes, as this is how germs can be spread.
• Stay Home. If you are sick, stay home and avoid infecting others.
• Be informed. Pay attention to public health announcements in your schools and communities and check back to this page for future updates.
